Lost Loot Pirate Treasure Hunt Game

A few weeks ago, I shared information about how you can receive a FREE Tall Tales Storytelling game from SCS Direct. This week, I am sharing information about another FREE game from SCS direct called the Lost Loot DIY Pirate Treasure Hunt Game.

What is Lost Loot?

The Lost Loot game plays like a scavenger hunt. In this game, players read clues and search for hidden keys around their house in order to open the Lost Loot treasure chest at the end. This do-it-yourself pirate treasure hunt comes with the following:

  • Pirate “Lost Loot” treasure chest
  • Plastic gems
  • 100 clue cards
  • 30 blank clue cards
  • 5 keys
  • 10 clue card sleeves (envelopes)
  •  Instruction Manual

Lost Loot comes with 100 clues that refer to locations and objects that you would find in most houses. This makes it an excellent game for home but it can certainly be adapted for the classroom or speech room. Because the game also comes with 30 blank clue cards, you can easily write clues specific to your location. You could set up clues around a classroom, speech room, the school and even on the playground!

Why I Love it!

Language Skills – Students will practice receptive language skills as they read (or listen to) the clues. You can practice receptive vocabulary and following directions. In addition, you can practice spatial concepts (e.g., UNDER, BEHIND, ON TOP, etc) as you talk about WHERE the clues were hidden. You also need to sequence the keys to open the treasure chest (saving the skeleton key for LAST)

Cognitive Skills – During this interactive game, students will be using problem solving and critical thinking skills as they consider each clue. They will also be making inferences as they solve the riddles.

Motor Skills – This game will get your students moving as they search for clues and keys around the house, school, or classroom. They will need to carefully line up each key in order to open the chest. In addition, they also need to use precise motor skills and combined muscle movements (turn and lift at the same time) to engage with the treasure box.

Cooperative – I recently wrote a blog post about cooperative activities. Lost Loot is another fun cooperative game where there are no winners or losers. Cooperative activities promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. In a cooperative game, players work together as a team and the focus is on cooperation rather than competition.

Engaging – Kids love pirates and searching for hidden clues. If your students love scavenger hunts or escape rooms, they will love this game!

A Few Tips

Adaptable: This game could easily be adapted to use with any task cards to target any speech or language skill. The card sleeves are the perfect size to hold most speech cards (including fun deck cards). You could even put several cards inside each envelope.

Treasure: The gems included in this game are beautiful but they don’t fill the treasure chest. There is plenty of room to add more treasures and trinkets to the chest and this will make the game even more exciting.

Be Careful: This game has an intricate lock mechanism that requires 5 unique keys in order to open the chest. The plastic keys can break easily if you try to force them too hard. The lock can also be a little tricky as you have to turn the final skeleton key and lift at the same time. For this reason, I think this game is best for elementary aged students. Younger students (K-1) will definitely need an adult to help them read the clues and open the chest gently.
